DONALD DEMERS

American B. 1956

BIOGRAPHY

B. 1956 in Lunenburg, Massachusetts; currently lives in Booth Bay, Maine

Celebrated for his swift and boldly painted canvases of marine and coastal life, Donald Demers is ranked among the top marine artists currently living and working in the United States. Demers’ interest in marine subject matter developed at an early age. Raised in rural Massachusetts, as a boy he spent the summer months in Maine near Boothbay Harbor. Encouraged by his mother and grandmother, he would entertain himself throughout the day by sketching and painting local boats on the water while developing an interest in sailing. Although, he is for the most part a self taught painter, he credits his high school art teacher as being a prominent influence during his formative years. Furthering his education, Demers enrolled at the School of the Worcester Art Museum, Worcester, MA, and  the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, MA

Shortly after completing his studies Demers began his professional career as an illustrator producing noteworthy imagery for Yankee magazine, Maine Boats and Harbors, Offshore magazine and National Geographic. In 1984 he transitioned from illustration to fine art in the pursuit of developing his own ideas and artistic vision. Inspired by the methods and philosophies of nineteenth-century American landscape painting, Demers relies, like his predecessors, on direct observation and experience to inform his larger, studio works. It is this type of uncompromising dedication for truth that empowers him to capture illusive moments in nature often giving way to pleasurable tensions and excitements within each mark.

Demers is a “Fellow” of the American Society of Marine Artists, an elected member of the Guild of Boston Artists, The California Art Club, and a signature member of Plein Air Painters of America.  He has won a record seventeen awards at the Mystic International Marine Art Exhibition, Mystic, CT. His work has been exhibited in numerous commercial and museum exhibitions thoughout the United States including the Cape Cod Museum of Art, Dennis, MA, The Frye Art Museum, Seattle WA and the Artnot Museum, Elmira, NY. Demers has produced numerous instructional videos, conducts workshops and often lectures on landscape and marine art throughout the United States and Europe. He currently lives between Eliot and Boothbay, Maine.
