Zoey Frank

American B. 1987

BIOGRAPHY

Born 1987 in Boulder, Colorado; Currently lives in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Osculating between naturalism and abstraction Zoey Frank's sophisticated method of recreating space, depth and form rests on her ability to loose things, to push and pull, so in turn, she might gain something new. Frank does not remember a time when she wasn't creating however it was the large-scale figure paintings of Da Vinci, Raphael and Michelangelo that stole her heart as a teen and lead her to dream of one day becoming a figure painter. Frank began her early art studies at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana before enrolling in the four year program at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle where she studied classical technique with Juliette Aristides. In 2014 she received her MFA in painting from the Laguna College of Art and Design.

In Laguna, Frank was exposed to modern art theories and her canvases began to take on a whole new light as she experienced a "freeing up" while working in various genres. Frank's realism embraces the spirit of the academician and often reverberates the art of the past. In White Bed, 2016, the male figure echoes Jean–Joseph Perraud’s sculpture, Despair and in her 2016 work, Brunch, she evokes Diego Velázquez’s, The Feast of Bacchus. However, Frank chooses to solve formal aspects of painting in a modern way and feels free to use what is available to help her facilitate a visual idea which only reinforces its style.

Frank has received numerous honors and awards, including three Elizabeth Greenshields grants, the Avigdor Arikha Memorial International Residency Scholarship, the Artist’s Magazine All Media Competition Grand Prize of 2012, the Hudson River Fellowship in 2012, scholarships from the Albert K. Murray foundation, the Stacey Foundation and the Art Renewal Center. Her work has been featured in Fine Art Connoisseur, American Art Collector, the International Artist Magazine, Artist’s Magazine, and Southwest Art, among other publications, and is exhibited in galleries across the United States and Europe.
