Caroline Nelson

Born 1998 in Arlington VA; currently lives in Cary, NC.

Caroline Nelson began her art education at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Richmond, VA (2016-2018). Although VCU offered courses in drawing and painting the program was not as traditional and rigorous as she might have liked. For these reasons she decided to leave VCU in search of an educator in classical technique. It was about this time that she discovered the work of Boston School painter, Henry Wingate and was welcomed into his atelier in Madison, VA as a full time student. Wingate stressed the importance of technical skill, accurate visual representation, and classical beauty. While working at Wingate’s studio Nelson was able to attend workshops in portrait painting with figure painter, Joshua LaRock and attend courses in drawing at the Grand Central Atelier in NY. In 2020 she was accepted into the intern program at East Oaks Studio in Raleigh, NC where she studies today under the directoships of Louis Carr and Alex Venezia.

Caroline Nelson currently lives and paints full time in Cary, NC. She is continually inspired by the old masters and wishes to celebrate natural beauty in her drawings and oil paintings.
