Dale Zinkowski | Biography

Born 1975 in New York; currently lives in Limoux, France

Dale Zinkowski began his formal studies in art at The School of Visual Arts, NYC thinking one day he would become a graffiti writer. After many trips to the Met, he began to fall in love with the Masters and the verisimilitude an artist could achieve in his subject while working with oil paint. Subsequently, he changed his focus to more traditional forms of artmaking and graduated in 1997 with a BFA in Fine Arts. While at The School of Visual Arts he was introduced by a faculty member to the work of Classical Realist, John Fredrick Murray, a disciple of the late Frank Rily who designed a unique method of drawing the head, hands, and figure known today as the Rily Method. Interested in learning more about Murray’s artistic process, Zinkowsi began taking private lessons at his atelier. Murray was especially influential in Zinkowski’s early artistic development so when he decided to move his studio from New York to Arizona Zinkowski followed him. After three years of private study with Murray, Zinkowski contemplated returning to New York but chose Florence, Italy instead. While living in Florance he enrolled in a rigorous drawing program at the Florence Academy of Art (2012 – 2013). In 2013 he made his way back to New York for his final chapter of study and was accepted into the full time – four year program at the Grand Central Atelier where he studied classical technique with Jacob Collins, Ted Minoff, Will St. John and Colleen Barry earning his certificate in 2017.

Dale Zinkowski is primarily known for his subtle and well-composed tabletop arrangements of fruits, vegetables and time-honored objects. He is a core instructor for the advanced study of painting at The Grand Central Atelier and often teaches workshops and lectures in the US and abroad. He is represented by galleries in Massachusetts and New York and currently lives and maintains a studio in the South of France where he lives with his wife and son.
