Biography

Louise Ernestine Anders is an emerging representational artist from Adelaide, Australia. As a young girl, Louise enjoyed drawing and painting and was often found rendering objects collected from walks in nature. Although her developing skills and talents were artistic in nature when it came time for considering a career after high school she followed her interests in the natural sciences and subsequently became a hydrologist. In 2015 after 10 years of working in the science industry, she felt drained and exhausted by corporate life and decided to return to her ever-present passion for painting and drawing.

Not long after leaving her job as a groundwater scientist she moved to Brisbane and earnestly attended numerous workshops by leading Australian Artist, Andrew Bonneau. In 2016 she applied and was accepted into the program at Grand Central Atelier in New York where she studied classical technique under the direction of Jacob Collins, Edward Minoff, Justin Wood, Devin Cecil Wishing, Patrick Byrnes, Gregory Mortenson, Katie G. Whipple, Kathryn Engberg, and Anthony Baus.  Louise cites Justin Wood as being very influential in the development of her artistry and has continued her studies with him by attending private classes and workshops.Shortly after completing her studies in New York, Louise and her husband moved to Los Gatos, California where she set up a small studio not far from their home. While living in California, she began to refine her painting techniques and cultivate her style. During that time she had two children, Luke and Emma, but still made the time to paint while everyone slept.

Louise has always loved being outdoors and observing nature, which initially led her to her career in the sciences where she worked to understand and protect groundwater resources.  She continues to pursue her love of the natural world through her still-life painting. Presently, Louise is drawn to painting fruit, flowers, and leaves from the gardens that surround her.  She loves the continual cycle of nature, watching buds bloom, blossoms morph into fruit, leaves pale, and fall.  She gathers her subjects by hand directly from her garden and the surrounding land.  Her drawings and paintings are all completed from life allowing her to observe, understand and interpret nature and light in all its complexity.

In her words, “My compositions strive for elegance and simplicity, with a timeless modern vibe. My color palette reflects my love of greens, blues, pale neutrals, and the ever classic black. I love to give my paintings a feeling of lightness and space through both composition and a refined color palette. I paint as if I am sculpting, not relying on what I see, but on how I understand the form to be turning; pushing and pulling objects into and out of the canvas with changes in value and chroma.” The inspiration for the artist’s paintings is varied. She endlessly observes the paintings of the old Masters from Henri Fantin-Latour to Jean-Léon Gérôme to Rembrandt and Van Gough to name a few.  She has hand-crafted ceramic vases and mugs scattered around her studio as well as books on interior design, and gardening that have been known to inspire a new painting.  And of course, just being amongst nature is endless inspiration.

In January of 2022, Louise and her family moved back to her hometown of Adelaide, Australia after more than 10 years in the United States.  Her new studio is in the Adelaide hills where she is surrounded by eucalyptus trees, rose gardens, native flowers, and fruit trees.  She continues to paint while everyone sleeps.
