Biography

b. 1984 in Concord, Massachusetts

Sarah Bird studied classical technique at the Grand Central Atelier (2014 – 2018) in New York City and shortly after an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts at Sierra Nevada University/UNR at Lake Tahoe (2023).

Drawing on techniques from a background in realism Bird weaves landscape and still life together to create self-determined worlds that often break from strict and faithful representations of nature. Layering and re-arranging motifs from the history of Western oil painting, she uses an old language to depict her contemporary life while vividly describing personal objects set against deep horizons that often nod to the surreal twists of Bosch, van Eyck and other Flemish Primitives.

She now lives with her husband, the writer Nick Neely, in the Wood River Valley of Idaho. The recipient of a 2017 Idaho Arts Grant, her paintings have been shown in New York, Los Angeles, and Block Island, Rhode Island.
